The Role of Physical Therapy in Supporting Breastfeeding Moms

Both the World Health Organization and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that breastfeeding occur for at least the first 2 years of life. For the first, 6 months of life exclusive breastfeeding is recommended prior to the introduction of solid foods. Unfortunately, a lot of women cease their breastfeeding journey prior to the 6 month mark. We recognize that breastfeeding can have many challenges ranging from societal viewpoints, employment, and physiological concerns; however, we also believe that more women would continue their breastfeeding journey if they were aware of the support that is available to them. If women are having challenges with breastfeeding and/or any of the challenges mentioned above they should consult a lactation consultant to help them navigate towards success.
You may be surprised to learn that physical therapists can play a major role in helping women to have a successful breastfeeding journey. Some people may know of the benefits of the infant seeing a physical therapist when breastfeeding challenges arise, but most people are not aware of the role that a physical therapist can play in assisting the breastfeeding mother.
Here are a few ways that physical therapists can assist breastfeeding mothers.
Addressing Postural Issues:
Breastfeeding often requires hours of sitting or lying down, which can lead to poor posture and strain on various muscles. Physical therapists can provide guidance on maintaining proper posture while breastfeeding, preventing issues such as back pain, neck strain, and shoulder tension.
 Relieving Muscular Discomfort:
The act of breastfeeding can place additional strain on certain muscle groups, such as the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Physical therapists can develop tailored interventions to properly address involved muscles, helping alleviate discomfort and reduce the risk of long-term pain.
 Core Strengthening:
Pregnancy and childbirth can weaken the core muscles, which are crucial for maintaining stability and posture during breastfeeding. Physical therapists can create exercises to target the core muscles, aiding in their recovery and helping moms feel more comfortable while breastfeeding. Physical therapists have the best understanding of assessing and addressing these limitations, while allowing the body to properly heal following childbirth.
 Scar Tissue Management:
Cesarean sections and other surgical procedures can leave scar tissue that could cause discomfort during breastfeeding. Physical therapists trained in interventions to help treat scars and use specialized techniques to minimize pain and increase flexibility around the scar area.
 Lactation Posture & Techniques:
Physical therapists can educate breastfeeding moms about different breastfeeding positions that minimize strain on the body. Techniques such as using pillows for support and adjusting chair height can make a significant difference in comfort and posture.
 Addressing Blocked Ducts and Mastitis:
Physical therapists can teach moms self-massage techniques to prevent and alleviate blocked milk ducts, which can lead to mastitis. By promoting better lymphatic drainage, these techniques can support overall breast health. Physical therapists can help the mother recognize when referral to a lactation consultant is needed in managing potential causes of blocked ducts and mastitis as well.
 Stress Reduction:
Breastfeeding can be emotionally and physically demanding, leading to stress and tension. Physical therapists can incorporate relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and gentle stretches into a routine, helping moms manage stress and improve their overall well-being.
 What’s the take home message?
Physical therapy’s role in supporting breastfeeding moms is essential for addressing postural issues, muscular discomfort, core strength, scar tissue, and more! Physical therapists can significantly enhance a mother’s breastfeeding experience. If you are a breastfeeding mother, no matter how far into the journey you are, a physical therapist can help you along the way.
